Obstacle Identification & Prioritization

  WHAT

Obstacles are inevitable when executing a strategy, but how you choose to handle them is what can make or break your plan. Properly identifying and prioritizing obstacles, and identifying actions to clear these obstacles, is critical to successfully executing a strategy.

Our Obstacle Identification & Prioritization model allows you to:
1) NOODLE & TAG: Identify the obstacles that could prevent you from successfully achieving your mission/goals and categorize by the area(s) they apply to.
2) VOTE for the obstacles you feel will most prevent you from achieving your mission/goals.
3) RATE each obstacle on its impact and likelihood, then assign a priority level.
4) ACTION: Identify specific next actions to minimize or prevent each obstacle.

  WHO

The Obstacle Identification & Prioritization model can be used by project managers, risk managers, and department directors.

  WHY

Obstacles of all sorts can occur during strategy implementation. Often times, these obstacles can come from our own shortcomings such as resistance, slow decision-making, poor knowledge management, or unaligned business processes (Lyke-Ho-Gland, 2016). Recognizing and recording these obstacles as well as developing a plan to resolve them is a key way to remain agile and effective, and to ensure smooth sailing in your execution. Make sure you have a process in place during your planning and execution to record this learning and action plan: capture, ensure accessibility to, and engage employees in this knowledge so it is used to its full potential (Lyke-Ho-Gland, 2016). Rather than fearing the obstacles in your path, recognize them, discover how to overcome them, and ensure that this knowledge is shared with everyone for future encounters.

“Encountering obstacles is one thing we all have in common. The thing that sets us apart, however, is how we deal with obstacles. Some people allow obstacles to derail them; others have learned to jump the hurdles while running.” (Martinuzzi, 2013)

  HOW

1) NOODLE & TAG: Identify the obstacles that could prevent you from successfully achieving your mission/goals, and tag by area: People, Process, Technology, Financial, Compliance/Policy, Governance, Infrastructure, Market, Materials, Other.

2) VOTE for the obstacles you feel will most prevent you from achieving your mission/goals.

 3) RATE each obstacle on its impact and likelihood. Facilitator will categorize each obstacle by priority (high, medium, low).
